This year marks an incredible milestone for the Tai Chi Foundation — 50 years of teaching and spreading the profound benefits of tai chi. Founded in New York City by Patrick Watson, a student of Professor Chen Man Ching, the organization has been a guiding light for those seeking balance, mindfulness, and improved well-being through this ancient practice.
They are proudly celebrating five decades of dedication to sharing the transformative benefits of tai chi and qigong. With more than 30 affiliated schools and 310 teachers in 10 countries, TCF is recognized as the premier transnational tai chi school.
To commemorate this milestone, TCF will host a free online celebration on April 5, 2025. The event will bring together its Legacy Holders—practitioners who studied directly with founder Patrick Watson—alongside a global community of teachers and students. Everyone is invited to join this momentous occasion and experience the power of tai chi firsthand.
The History of the Tai Chi Foundation
The Tai Chi Foundation has its roots deeply embedded in New York City’s rich cultural landscape. In the 1960s, Chen Man Ching immigrated to the United States, bringing with him a lifetime of knowledge as a master of tai chi, Chinese medicine, and painting. Recognized for his innovative teaching methods, Chen adapted traditional tai chi techniques to make them more accessible to Western students.
His school in New York City became a gathering place for students eager to learn tai chi for both its meditative and physical health benefits. By emphasizing relaxation, posture, and internal energy flow, Chen’s teaching style resonated with a broad audience. This emphasis on practical health benefits allowed tai chi to gain popularity among individuals from all walks of life.
Following Chen Man Ching’s passing in 1975, his dedicated students carried forward his teachings, establishing what would eventually become the Tai Chi Foundation. Over the years, the Foundation expanded globally, offering classes, workshops, and resources to maintain the authenticity of Chen’s original methods. The organization’s dedication to preserving and expanding Chen’s teachings has helped tai chi flourish in communities worldwide.
Today, the Foundation remains a beacon for those seeking physical wellness and mental clarity through tai chi practice.

This might surprise someone who is a professional teacher of Tai Chi.
I have had ballet training since 8, and have continued throughout to do some sort of
dance classes even after 60. Having excellent health can move freely even now at 83.
Maybe I could be dreaming, but since it is even hard to get into a class near us in Florida, where my husband and I live, all of a sudden it came to my mind that maybe I should just find a class where I could be taught to teach TAI Chi.
In my very younger years, I grew up in New York, and just as I was searching online
Of this interest, I caught sight of New York’s Scot Prath!
I believe in miracles of happening and thought: ” I have to start somewhere. Beginning is the most important part, as if it is realized by being half already accomplished”.
We live such long lives these days, that is if the good Lord wills, I would somehow get in the picture of this goal!
One handicap I have is that I cannot travel anywhere but right where I am living now with my husband who is over 90!
My goal is to find a class near us in our driving distance to get to this goal I am very gung-ho about! Find a place where I can get QUIgong teacher training-
need some resources to become a Quifong Instructor.
Thank you, Grace
Congratulations on a life well-lived Grace! Satori has Qigong training programs. These are sets of movements that you can learn and teach to people who can stand or sit. My favorite is the Good-Morning and Good-Evening sets. You can read more about them here: https://taichibasics.com/learn-qigong-without-a-teacher/
